MAK Keys & Phone Activation: The Complete Guide
What MAK activations are, how the remaining-count pool works, and how to activate offline machines by phone.
MAK (Multiple Activation Key) is Microsoft's volume licensing mechanism for organizations that don't run their own KMS server. One 25-character key contains a pool of activations — every activated device permanently consumes one.
How the activation pool works
- •A MAK has a fixed count — e.g., 50 or 500 activations.
- •Each successful activation subtracts 1, permanently.
- •The count is tracked by Microsoft — you can query it anytime (our PID Checker shows it for MAK keys).
- •Reinstalling Windows on the same PC still consumes a new activation — hardware changes don't refund the pool.
Online activation (default)
slmgr /ipk <MAK-key> slmgr /ato
The machine contacts Microsoft activation servers, the count decrements by one, done.
Phone activation (offline machines)
When a machine has no internet — isolated networks, secure facilities, repairs — phone activation gets you a Confirmation ID instead:
- •Run slui 4 as Administrator
- •Select your country — you'll see the Installation ID (9 blocks of digits)
- •Call the Microsoft activation line shown, enter the Installation ID when prompted
- •You receive a Confirmation ID — enter it in the same window
- •Activated — no internet ever touched the machine
Reseller tip
When buying MAK keys wholesale, the remaining activation count is what you're actually paying for. Always check the counter before bulk purchase — it's the single most important number.
Common MAK errors
| Error | Meaning | Fix |
|---|---|---|
| 0xC004C020 | MAK limit exhausted | Key pool is empty — need a new key or count increase |
| 0xC004C008 | Key activation limit | Same as above |
| 0xC004C00D | Unsupported key type | Key/channel mismatch — check the key's real channel |
| 0x8007232B | DNS/KMS not found | Machine tried KMS, not MAK — install the MAK explicitly |
