Windows 11 Pro vs Home: Is the Upgrade Worth It?
BitLocker, Remote Desktop, Hyper-V, domain join — what Pro actually adds over Home, and who should pay for it.
Windows 11 Home covers everything a casual user needs. Windows 11 Pro adds the features that matter for work, security, and power users. The price difference between keys is often small — here is what you actually get for it.
| Feature | Home | Pro |
|---|---|---|
| BitLocker device encryption | — | ✓ |
| Remote Desktop (host) | — | ✓ |
| Hyper-V virtualization | — | ✓ |
| Domain / Azure AD join | — | ✓ |
| Group Policy editor | — | ✓ |
| Windows Sandbox | — | ✓ |
| Max RAM support | 128 GB | 2 TB |
| Assigned access / kiosk mode | — | ✓ |
Who actually needs Pro
- •Anyone joining a company domain or Azure AD — mandatory
- •BitLocker — full-disk encryption, required by many workplaces and essential if the laptop is stolen
- •Remote Desktop host — connecting TO the machine (Home can only connect out)
- •Developers using Hyper-V, WSL2 with VM features, or Windows Sandbox
- •Kiosk/POS setups — assigned access locks a PC to a single app
The smart buy
For a personal machine that just browses and games, Home is fine. For anything work-related, a laptop you travel with, or a machine that might join a domain later — buy Pro. The resale value difference also favors Pro.
